Are fabric shower curtain backing s that claim to be mildew resistant really effective at preventing mildew?
I usually buy vinyl shower cutain backing
s for less than $3 at Target, then just throw them away when they develop lots of mildew. I live in an apartment that has no exhaust fan in the bathroom, so mildew is practically unavoidable. Will it be worth it to spend $10 on one of the fabric, mildew resistant backing
s? I imagine that I could put the fabric kind in the washing machine if it begins to develop mold instead of throwing it away, correct?

with a fabric shower curtain?
I bought a fabric shower curtain. It”s really cute and I want to keep it. Do I need to use a vinyl backing underneath so it doesn”t get nasty and then just throw the vinyl backing away?...
Why throw vinyl away, stick them in washer with cup of chlorx or chlorine and they come out clean and mildew clean. Do it all the time.
I had a vinyl mildew resistant shower curtain liner – fromTarget I think – which really did stay clean a lot longer than the non-resistant type. Sorry don’t know about a fabric liner.
It is not the shower curtains, it is the soap scum build-up on them that mildews. Even the “mildew-resistant” type soon become coated with soap, skin- and hair products and will indeed mildew. I don”t buy the plain vinyl or mildew-resistent shower curtains. I use tightly-woven lightweight synthetic fabric shower curtains with no liner at all. They are sheer and dry quickly, don”t hold sticky coatings as much and IMO they are much prettier than vinyl. They are easily tossed in the household washing machine, and I bleach them. They come out looking nearly new. No need to machine dry, just hang it up damp.
When I had curtains and no exhaust in my bathroom, I would leave my curtain closed and spray with a solution of 2tsp tea tree oil (Wal-Mart pharmacy) in 12 oz water. That will keep mold from forming as tea tree oil is a very strong anti fungal.
Fabric does not work. Go to a store like Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond and invest about $15 is a good quality plastic mildrew resistant shower curtain. They work great. I have used them for years. Fabric is never with water marks and mildrew.
